Sara Tomko & Alice Wetterlund On New Dynamics With Harry In Resident Alien Season 3 (2024)

Resident Alien season 3 premieres this week on SYFY, with major changes for all of its characters on the horizon. D'Arcy finally discovered the truth about Harry's identity in the season 2 finale, eliminating the major secret that stood between Asta and her best friend. However, D'Arcy and Asta's mission to find their life's purpose may be cut short, as the Grey aliens plot to take over Earth and end the human race.

Sara Tomko, who plays the role of Asta Twelvetrees, is most well-known for projects such as Once Upon a Time and Sneaky Pete. Meanwhile, Alice Wetterlund portrays D'Arcy Bloom and has been featured in People of Earth, Space Force, and Single Parents. The rest of Resident Alien's main cast includes Alan Tudyk, Elizabeth Bowen, Corey Reynolds, Meredith Garretson, Levi Fiehler, and Judah Prehn.

Screen Rant interviewed Sara Tomko and Alice Wetterlund about Asta's mother-esque relationship with Harry in Resident Alien season 3, and D'Arcy's introduction to the extraterrestrial.

Sara Tomko & Alice Wetterlund Talk Resident Alien Season 3

Screen Rant: Alice, how excited are you that D'Arcy is finally in the loop?

Alice Wetterlund: That's the big thing for me. First of all, I love Screen Rant. I'm very excited to be talking to you. I'm a big fan of Screen Rant. I'm a huge sci-fi head. I love Star Trek. I've started podcasts. I will read and consume any sci-fi that comes across my path. So to be involved in this part of the storyline was a dream for just me as an actor.

And to not spoil too much, I really love the way that the dynamic shifts when it's not just Harry and Asta, but when it's Harry, Asta, and D'Arcy, or just Harry and D'Arcy, and how D'Arcy's dysfunction plays a role in the trajectory of things felt very right to me.

Sara Tomko: It was really fun to watch you work together. There's a scene that I don't know if I can talk about, but there is a scene with the two of you, and I just thought, "I wonder what it was like to be on set that day." Were you guys just constantly improving back and forth? And were you trying things out? Were you making each other laugh?

Alice Wetterlund: That day, it was making each other laugh a lot. We never get to hang out, just me and Alan, so it was really fun in that regard. But he had so much dialogue to get through, and then he had two days after that, back to back of so much dialogue, that Chris took me aside and was like, "You really need to be off-book. Both for you, and maybe everyone else in the room." It was a lot of responsibility. I felt a lot of pressure.

Sara Tomko: But you nailed it.

Alice Wetterlund: I hope people feel that I nailed it.

Sara, the friendship between Asta and Harry is a major part of the series. His love for her is what stopped him from destroying the human race. How would you describe their dynamic in season 3?

Sara Tomko: Good question. First of all, I really love how emotional Harry gets to be this season. In season 1, I felt like he was trying to figure out how to exist in a human body, and he was just discovering human emotion. Even at the end of season 1 when he discovers that he has love for me he can't understand. You know, "It's you." Everything wrapped up with the anger and the fury. It's so nice, two seasons later, to see he can't even control his emotions anymore. He's just all over the place. He's just constantly feeling things.

Alice Wetterlund: It's puberty.

Sara Tomko: Yes, totally. It's like he's a teenager going through puberty. So our dynamic feels more like a mom and teenage son. Actually, that's really great. I think, in season 2, she's constantly irritated with him when he's in his terrible twos and constantly breaking things and doing weird stuff. And now, Alice, or D'Arcy, is frustrated.

Alice Wetterlund: Yeah. And I'm the person going, "You let this guy do this sh*t?" And she's like, "Oh, I can say that, but you can't say that."

Sara Tomko: I have this new dynamic, which is really much softer, and I have to explain to him, "No, we don't do that. Remember?" And I have to tell you, "Sometimes he doesn't understand the difference between right and wrong." Without being condescending, it's a chance for Asta to sort of try out being a mother when she never really got to with Jay.

But also watching him sort of go away from her this season a little bit, and he's with other people and having other experiences, it's almost also like being an empty nester and Asta trying to figure out, "What does that mean for me now? What do I do when I'm not helping someone? Especially [helping them] save the world? Then I have nothing? What is my purpose?" I think a lot of characters are asking themselves that this season.

Alice, I would love to get your take on D'Arcy's romantic life because she hasn't had much luck. What do you want from her in a partner, or would you rather her be alone for the time being?

Alice Wetterlund: I love this question. The season 2 arc for my character, playing a real relationship that she developed with Elliot, played amazingly by Justin Rain, who is a very close friend now. I respect him so much as an actor. Him really being part of the show helped shape that relationship, I think, and that character of Elliot. At first, we had cast somebody a lot closer to just a really handsome guy who had it all going on. And Justin brought in this sort of groundedness and something that played off D'Arcy' loose cannonness. He keeps her still and grounded. It's very interesting to watch that dynamic fall apart, I think. You feel it.

We had to do that very quickly with very few scenes. So that was important to her development, or lack thereof. She really is not able to admit or even recognize that her behavior really ruined that. It's not that she just can't have nice things. She's not taking responsibility yet in her life. Honestly, good for Elliot getting out of there because he deserves better. It's hard to watch. It's hard to watch D'Arcy unravel that way, but I also think that she's got a ways to go, and she's getting there. I don't really know if a relationship is in the cards for her. I'm kind of Team Elliott. I'm Team Elliot endgame, but maybe nobody's endgame.

Sara Tomko: Yeah. Maybe it's like learning how to love yourself.
